Final Note Before Conference
Hello delegates!
It is I ‒ your head chair ‒ writing to let you know that we have entered the final few days before BMUN 70 (yaaaaaaay!). As such, I thought it best to discuss the learning goals for our committee while also providing some advice.
If I were to boil down the essence of this committee into three intellectual pillars, they would be:
1) Communism: Early Theory and Subsequent Development
Be certain you are comfortable with the fundamentals of Marx's critiques of capitalism and how said critiques morphed into the ideology that would eventually hold sway over the most populous country on the planet.
2) Maoist China: Political, Cultural, and Economic History
Make sure you are intimately familiar with the timeline and political context of the Mao era; as a guideline, check that you can provide a basic explanation for why any given historical development during this era ‒ however seemingly extreme ‒ occurred when and how it did.
3) The Reform Era: Economic Policies Following Mao's Death
This is perhaps the most important pillar. Put simply: you must know the basic policies utilized by the CCP following the passing of Mao in order to understand our committee. Understanding these areas will be key to your success during conference, as delegates who demonstrate command over all three will be judged favorably by the chairs.
However, we understand that not all delegates have the necessary background to fully contextualize all the information present in our topic synopsis; for that reason, we will be providing mini-lectures at the beginning of each topic in order to analyze and explain the basic fundamentals of capitalist and communist economics, while also addressing any specific questions the delegates have before we open debate. Please send us an email, or comment below, and note any areas of confusion you may have so that we may better prepare.
Finally, remember that BMUN is a learning conference and that delegates who attempt to stand out by trampling on others will not be viewed favorably. Be sure to provide space for others to speak and ensure that you listen to what they have to say; aim to win over others with knowledge and respect rather than intimidation and manipulation. Doing so will ensure that our committee is as enjoyable and educational for everyone involved as we know it can be.
Best of luck in the final days of preparation; we can't wait to see you all at BMUN 70! 😊
Andrew Reynoso
